Nice anvil, a little heat on the tip and a few licks with a hammer like Thomas says and bida bing. It needn't be sharp but loose that mushroom on the end, it will be a problem.

You could say this is at the opposite end of the spectrum in regards to Rapid City.....I did see the particapants/demonstators indulge in a beer or two... :o ..But not me...... ^_^
-
That looks like quite the machine, but mine has no ''motherboard'' to fry unless you consider me a motherboard.... ^_^ What I need is a simple, in the trenches, free form bending machine that is ready when I am to simply bend a chunk of metal when I don't want to fire up the torch or the forge. And that is alot when I'm doing things like the colt made of forged branches I'm sure analog limit switches could be fitted but I prefer the old 'meat computer' ....I reckon having the outboard pins on the ram has it's advantages but this is simpler to engineer and the pins are easy to change quickly.....It is what it is.... :)

Well, a sculptor friend of mine made me an offer that I couldn't refuse on my old bulldoze bender so I'm building another with some features that will improve the machine. The most important of which is to be able to bend a 90 deg angle with the widest two pins, which should be no problem since I've increased the cylinder stroke from 6'' to 8''. I'm still using a 4'' cyl with a 110v 2500 psi self contained power unit, power was never an issue with the old one.
The channel iron is 12''x3''x36. the sides will be 36''x1/2''........more to come.......... -
I will say this though................a true master would never disparage another practicioner in public...................because professionals should adhere to a code of conduct
I couldn't agree more. I think humility is one of the marks of a true master, anyone who calls themselves one is 99 times out of a 100 on an ego trip. Another mark is the ''Master'' doesn't profess to know it all and still is in the process of learning which should never cease. If others wish to say you're a Master, then so be it.............mb -
any one can talk to a crowd and sell them a bill of goods.
I couldn't agree less. Working a crowd is an art unto itself and if you don't do it well people walk away most of the time. I remember watching Bruce Northridge at a norhhern Caifornia Ren Fair and he owned the crowd. He could make them laugh in between heats and wow them with his skill. Both work hand in hand..... -
Wish I could be there! Thanks for sharing, Bruce

I'm with JL, I've never see anybody other than Mr Wright put those flats across the front and back of each foot....Nice anvil.

my old teachers wife had to leave facebook, it was too distressing when almost 6 months after his death she got PM from him (lost in system of course) cyber space can eat things, only to regurgitate them at a later date
Yeah, It's probly a cyber glitch or maybe I sent a friend request to Grant shortly before his death and some family member (the page is still active) approved it I can't remember............Or maybe....... well, it was a nice thing to wake up to, Thanks Grant.....(just in case) -
Your background(s) are way too busy, Trees, grass, the hat and the straw is too busy in itself. A nice piece of leather, a wood board or a smooth rock for a background with maybe some little common thing like a coin for scale, then crop the pix so all you see is your chosen background and your subject. The images should be about the knives. The last pic has too much glare on the left blade....hope this helps.....MB :)

When I opened my email this morning I was pleasntly surprised to see (and mystified) to see I had been accepted as a friend by none other than Grant Sarver!??? B) ....Better late than never, but I knew that already Grant, Happy trails.....

Considering the height of anvil and the grining man, I would say the Master of that shop is away, this is an imposter, Obviously too old to be his apprentice, and he is poaching in this shop.
I think this could be it, everybody knows there's no way you could live that long with an un vented forge...... or it could show what happens to a 30 year old smith after say 10 years of breathing that crap plus he's suffering from dementia..... -

What's the trim color going to be?
Frosty the lucky
Trim color........I gots to show you no stinking trim color!!
I was thinking of some gay yellow pinstriping though.... .....and yellow of course for the foot treadle.......
The spring attachment that pulls the treadle up and transfers the energy to the clutch arm by pushing it up through a spindley 5/16'' rod just seemed bass ackwards to me so I aranged differently as shown. The old arangment also multiplies whatever slop there is in the linkage because it pushed up and pulled down, anyway I like this better and I don't have to fight assembling it.....Think I'll go to a stouter spring though -
Just to clarify, thats one 3/4" tube size burner per 355 ci as per http://ronreil.abana.org/design1.shtml
Larger burners would be able to heat larger spaces
Thanks Dodge, ya learn something every day...... :) -
Did you wear a costume to complement that freaky ax? Pics please....
-
The ''normal'' or optimal size should equal 355 cubic inches per burner.....I use the type of burner Dave uses and I love em. Those Y fittings are a little spendy so I used 1 1/4 T's instead which are slightly less efficient but can be bougt at a local HW store......Shown below is a Mcmaster Carr link.

Nice they aren't tapered, that stuff makes decent power hammer dies.

Never seen one done quite like this.....

2 piece hammer ?

I reckon once hammers get over a certian size it makes more sense to do them in two castings rather than one especially when the correct anvil tup ratio can only be accomplished by setting the anvil beloiw grade. Otherwise the anvil would be too tall...........
